Dr. Michael S. Champney
Dr. Champney has been with DeKalb Surgical Associates since 2003. He received his undergraduate degree from Stanford University and earned his medical degree at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee. He completed his surgical residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center serving as chief resident in 2002-2003. He is board certified in general surgery and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS). He has served as Chief of the Department of Surgery at what is now Emory Decatur Hospital. He has also served as Section Chief for General Surgery and the Cancer Liaison Physician for the Commission on Cancer. He has consistently been named a “Top Doc” by Atlanta Magazine since 2017.
Dr. Champney utilizes several techniques for hernia repair. He offers open, laparoscopic, and robotic repair of inguinal hernias. He performs laparoscopic and open repairs of ventral and incisional hernias and has many years of experience with component separation repairs for larger hernias. With over 20 years of experience repairing abdominal wall hernias using both open and laparoscopic techniques, Dr. Champney can help guide his patients to the best type of repair for their hernia.
Dr. Champney is a member of the American College of Surgeons, American Society of Breast Surgeons, Southeastern Surgical Society, Georgia Surgical Society, and the Medical Association of Georgia. He is on staff at numerous hospitals in the Atlanta area but performs most of his general surgical procedures at Emory Decatur Hospital and Northside Hospital Atlanta.
Dr. Champney is married to Dr. Kimberly Champney, a cardiologist at Northside Hospital. They enjoy spending time with their children and traveling.
